Ambleside Shopping

Ambleside has some great shops that are definitely worth checking out. Because this is a very small town, you won't find some of the larger chain stores, but you will find many smaller unique and individual shops that offer fine worksmanship and quality. You can do a lot of great shopping here, and you can find some great gifts as well. There are many types of stores, and a lot of them deal with rare goods or antiques. Many tourists come to the area for the shopping, and you can walk up and down the streets going into stores looking at goods. Some of the better known shops for gifts include Bark Mill, Reekies, and The Rock Shop. If you want to get some good food and other candies, you can go to Apple Pie Cafe and Bakery, Claytons Butchers, and The Sweet Jar. For outdoor types Ambleside really is a top location with stores such as Gaynors, Rohan, Ghyllside cycles and the areas biggest bike shop Biketreks.

The Rockshop

In 1996 we opened our first Rock Shop in Ambleside, aiming to create a place where all ages could enjoy and purchase rocks, crystals, minerals and fossils and a large collection of gemstone related items. Our products range in age from those which are millions of years old to the latest gemstone fashion items.

Reekies of Grasmere

Reekies is a small family run business founded by Christopher Reekie, a handloom weaver born in Selkirk, Scotland and who moved to Grasmere in 1950 to set up his own weaving business. Chris's twon sons were both taught how to weave when they left school and wife Mary was a trained darner and mender. So the whole operation from the raw wool, to the finished woven article, could be carried out by the family members.
